Drugstore Dupe

9 May

I had hoped to do my concealer review this week but the pictures didn’t turn out well and I decided I needed to try them all again – so hopefully I’ll have it for you next week.

Instead I’m going to be doing a drugstore dupe post.

A few weeks ago when I was in Sephora I decided I wanted to try a new lip color. Something different from the coral/pinks I tend to gravitate towards. I ended up buying a NARS  Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in New Lover.

Yesterday I was at the drugstore looking at the Covergirl  Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm and wondering how similar it was. Curiosity got the better of me and I ended up going home with the Jam color.  Looking at the 2 packages side by side I never would have guessed they would be almost exactly the same color (our drugstore didn’t have testers so I had to guess based on the cap color)…

But as you can see it’s almost impossible to tell them apart at first glance.

So what are the differences? Well first of all NARS is a bit thicker and has a bit more shimmer to it. I would even venture to say it’s closer to a lip stick than a gloss. That being said, once they are on your lips it’s VERY hard to tell the difference between the 2 products.  The Cover Girl Gloss Balm is a bit larger and the pencil shaft is made of plastic (I think the NARS is wood). It has a silver bit at the bottom that you can twist to move the gloss up when it starts to get low. To be honest I don’t know if there is a way to get the NARS gloss up – if there is I haven’t found it yet. I suspect you have to use a sharpener (I dislike sharpeners – they have mangled my pencils more than once).

The one drawback with the Covergirl gloss stick was that there was no tester – but that could have just been at our local store. All things considered I would choose the Cover Girl over the NARS because it is a very comparable product at a cheaper price point.
