Facial Sunscreen

27 Jun

Do you wear sunscreen every day? If not have you added it to your skincare/makeup routine yet? Not only does it help prevent wrinkles (who needs to spend $$ on fancy wrinkle treatment creams when you can prevent approximately 80% of wrinkles from happening in the first place?) but it also helps prevent skin cancer which happens to be on the rise.

You may think you are protected if you wear Foundation, Tinted moisturizer, BB or CC cream with SFP but according to the Environmental Working Group “BB and CC creams are not adequate for use in intense sunlight nor long periods. Some of them may help protect skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation during low-exposure activities such as driving, walking between shaded areas or indoors, but they will not shield your skin from harmful rays if you are outside for a longer time span or if you will be in intense sunlight”. In order to get the proper amount of SPF in one of these products you would have to apply the product MUCH thicker than most people would wear. You will get better sun protection from a generous application of SPF 15 sunscreen than a thin application of SPF 50.

So what am I getting at with my SPF rambling? It’s a good idea to add a separate facial sunscreen to your routine every day. (Not to mention your body but that’s another topic).

I’ll admit I haven’t always been diligent in applying my facial sunscreen. Many times it was because even with the “oil-free” versions I still felt a bit greasy. I have combination/oily skin and it doesn’t take much to make it feel sticky/gross. I have found the solution. A couple of days ago I picked up NEUTROGENA® ULTRA SHEER® WATER-LIGHT® Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 60. It’s a very lightweight liquid that you shake up before applying. After the application I didn’t feel like I had anything on my face and there was no sheen on my skin. It works very well under makeup.

If you are like me and haven’t been a big fan of other facial sunscreens – this one is worth a try.

Review: Maybelline Volum Express The Rocket Waterproof Mascara

31 Mar
After the disaster that was the Cover Girl mascara, I decided I would give a different brand a try so I picked up Maybelline’s Volum’ Express The Rocket Mascara (the waterproof version).
The Claims:

Now, the most explosive, beautiful lashes ever! Volum’ Express The Rocket Mascara’s patented Supersonic Brush with micro bristles loads on big, sleek volume instantly. Why you’ll love it:
  • Explosive Volume in Rocket Time!
  • 8X Bigger. Smoother. Even.
  • Our fast-glide formula keeps lashes smooth.
  • Zero clumps!

My impression:

  • I like that product gets scraped off the brush as you pull it out of the tube – that way you don’t end up with too much product and clumpy, goopy lashes.
  • It didn’t clump and it separated my lashes
  • It didn’t flake (much…sometimes at the end of the day there would be  a bit under my eyes but not much)
  • It IS waterproof – unlike some mascaras that claim to be waterproof but aren’t

I wouldn’t say it gave my lashes lots of volume – but I usually only use one or two coats of mascara. It’s a good mascara but nothing special and not the best I’ve ever used.
My verdict: Its worth giving a try but don’t expect miracles.

Review: Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation

28 Mar
I don’t buy a lot of drugstore foundations  because they frequently don’t have testers and I also find it hard to find a color that matches my skin.
When I saw the Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation I decided to give it a try. It was on sale for less than $10 and I’m always looking for a solution to my oily T-zone woes.

The Claim : A feather light, oil free formula with an airy mousse texture that won’t feel heavy or greasy. Delivers all day shine control and blends flawlessly for a natural looking matte finish. Minimizes the appearance of pores.
My impression:
  • It does feel very weightless when it is on. I hate feeling like I have a mask of makeup
  • It is very natural looking  and doesn’t cake
  • The squeeze tube is great and doesn’t take up a ton of space
  • You only need a tiny pea sized amount for your whole face (I like to apply it with a damp Beauty Blender for a natural look)
  • It provides medium coverage
I still get a bit of breakthrough shine on my forehead but I have yet to find something that keeps me matte all day and doesn’t’ t look like a mask. This foundation comes in 6 shades which isn’t stellar but even with my fair skin I managed to find one to match.
The Verdict: Good value and worth trying if you can find one that matches your skin tone.

Review: COVERGIRL Flamed Out Mascara

25 Mar
I was searching for a new mascara when I saw this on sale at the drugstore and was intrigued ( I think it was the shape of the brush that caught my eye).
It claimed to instantly boost volume and lift the lashes up and out. For $6 I figured I would give it a try.  Here are my thoughts:
  • The brush was terribly awkward. It didn’t reach across the whole lash line and I found I got wayyyy too much product on the brush. Even after wiping it off on the neck of the bottle it went on my lashes pretty clumpy.
  • I bought the waterproof formula but it was definitely not waterproof. If my eyes  watered even a little I would have mascara all over my under eye area.
  • It flaked terribly for me.
The verdict: This product was a major disappointment  and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Review – Cover Girl truMagic Skin Perfector

12 Feb

I had heard of mattifying balms before but I didn’t want to shell out the money to try one when it might not even work ( I think the one I saw was $30?) When I saw the Cover Girl truMagic Skin Perfector in the drugstore I decided to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised.

I’ve since read many mixed reviews about this product. Most of the negative reviews have been about using it as a primer. I didn’t purchase it to use as a primer – I wanted to see how it would work to  mattify skin OVER makeup as opposed to powdering or blotting (neither of which work that well for me). You wouldn’t think a balm would mattifly your skin (can you imagine smearing lip balm on your forehead?)– but you would be wrong. This little product is amazing.  I lightly blotted my t zone and bye bye shine! Bonus – it didn’t take off my makeup or make me look cakey (like too much powder can).  The finish feels very smooth and velvety.

Now for the downside – there is no place to store the sponge that comes with it except on top of the product. Why they made it this way I have no idea. This isn’t the most hygienic option – so the best thing is to get rid of the sponge and just pat the product on with your fingers. The case is also a bit unwieldy for travel – but since I just plan to keep it in my desk at work that’s not an issue for me.

If oily areas are a trouble spot for you this is a product worth checking out.

Why didn’t I try this before! Review – MUFE Pro- Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation

8 Nov

A few months ago I was in Sephora looking for a good face powder and the sales associate there recommended the MAKEUP FOR EVER  Pro- Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation.  According to the company it can be used wet or dry but the plan was never to use it as a foundation  – only a finishing powder.

With its transforming texture, PRO FINISH is the 1st multi-use powder foundation that allows you to fully customize your finish and coverage level.
Formulated with exclusive bio-mimetic coated pigments, its breakthrough formula can be used wet or dry.

Apply it wet for a sheer semi-matte perfection or dry for a full coverage, matte result.
Created with talc lightweight formula, its texture is long lasting, has buildable coverage with no chalky effect and easily blends for a perfect professional result in just minutes.

Enriched with hydrating ingredients, PRO FINISH corrects and evens the complexion without drying our the skin.
Choose from its wide range of shades to find your perfect match.

As a finishing powder the Multi – Use powder was ok but I wasn’t wowed.  I still had an T-zone after a pretty short amount of time.  II still used it occasionally but it wasn’t my favorite product by any means.

Today I was  getting ready for work and just for the heck of it I decided I would  use  the powder wet and see what happened. I was pleasantly surprised!  It looked very natural and still did a good job evening out my complexion. If I had more time I could probably have gone over the uneven areas again for more coverage.  The best part? I went to the bathroom at 9am (did my makeup at 7) and my t zone wasn’t shiny. At 11:30 am it was starting to look a tiny bit shiny but normally by this time of day I would have an oil slick on my tzone.  It’s almost 3pm now and I still haven’t had to blot. This has NEVER happened before! I didn’t use mattifying products or powder – just the wet powder foundation!

The powder comes in 19 colors and is available at Sephora or the MAKEUP FOR EVER website.

Boscia BB Cream

5 Nov

I got a sample of this BB Cream with an order from Sephora quite a while ago. I finally decided to try it out last week. I was hesitant because it’s supposed to be one of those self-adjusting shades and honestly I’m a little leery of those.

What it is:
An oil-free, skin-perfecting “Blemish Balm” that creates a flawless finish as it moisturizes and nourishes the skin.

What it is formulated to do:
– Oil-free botanical formula to promote skin elasticity and reduce the look of fine lines
– Features SPF 27 sun protection
– Comes in one universal lustrous shade

B.B. Cream is the ultimate multifunctional treatment. The gentle botanical formula creates a lustrous, flawless finish as it hydrates, firms, and soothes the skin. It helps to diminish the appearance of pores, fine lines, and uneven skintone while providing long-wearing, natural coverage that conceals imperfections. The self-adjusting shade warms to complement most skintones for sheer, flawless coverage. Designed to repair damage and protect skin from future damage without irritation, it’s packed with antioxidants and physical sunscreens that provide broad-spectrum sun protection rated to SPF 27 and PA++. The PA system is a grade of UVA protection that provides superior defense against the rays that cause collagen damage and photo-aging of the skin.

My first impression – the formula was definitely not what I was expecting. When I first opened the package some liquid came out – like the product had seperated.  I don’ t know if it was because I had the sample for a while or if thats they way it normally is. I had to mix it together in my hands before I could apply it and it felt pretty watery and was hard to mix.  When I put the cream on my face it looked quite dark but it did lighten up a bit. I wouldn’t say it matched my skin tone – it gave me a yellowish cast that made me feel jaundiced.  Based on that sample it isn’t a product I would spend my money on.
