Do you want longer lashes?

19 Sep

I’m pretty sure that most people would say yes.  So I’m excited to tell you about a new product I  just got – Younique Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes.

“Our best selling product, 3D Fiber Lashes dramatically enhances and magnifies the appearance of your own lashes.”. Of course I was intrigued. Especially after I saw pictures of the results – but I was still skeptical. I knew someone that was having a Mascara party (online) so I decided to buy them.

First off you order online and the shipping was SUPER fast!  It comes in a lovely, sturdy case (shown above).

The instructions say to apply a thin coat of your regular mascara and then a layer of transplanting gel. Before the gel dries you take out the wand with the funny fibers all over it and apply to your lashes. Then you either finish up with the gel again or add gel and more lashes – always finishing with the transplanting gel.

Before I get to my photos here are a few things to note:

  • I wear contacts and have sensitive eyes and had no issues
  • I did have a tiny bit of flaking the first day (but that was after I wore them from 7am – 10pm) and needed more transplanting gel (last layer). The next day I had no flaking
  • They are water resistant – you can splash water on your face and they wont budge – but don’t splash water on your face and then rub your eyes vigorously.
  • They say they can be washed off with soap and water but I ended up with a flaky face when I did that. It was much easier just to use  my eye makeup remover first.

Verdict: I really like them. You get the false lash look without the weird feeling of false lashes (or the struggle to apply them and then pray they don’ t fall off). They do take a bit more time to apply (but not lots) so I might not wear them every day but will definitely  use them for a little extra oomph.

Where can you get them? Well I’m hosting a party you can either click the link here: Gimme longer lashes!

Or visit my party Facebook Page

And without further adieu – my before and after pics.

New Image after With one coat of mascara plus 2 coats of fibers.(The different angle is so that you could see my lashes better – they don’t focus very well straight on). Please note that my lashes tend to clump together naturally  – its not because of the product. If I had more time this am I could have fixed them…

Facial Sunscreen

27 Jun

Do you wear sunscreen every day? If not have you added it to your skincare/makeup routine yet? Not only does it help prevent wrinkles (who needs to spend $$ on fancy wrinkle treatment creams when you can prevent approximately 80% of wrinkles from happening in the first place?) but it also helps prevent skin cancer which happens to be on the rise.

You may think you are protected if you wear Foundation, Tinted moisturizer, BB or CC cream with SFP but according to the Environmental Working Group “BB and CC creams are not adequate for use in intense sunlight nor long periods. Some of them may help protect skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation during low-exposure activities such as driving, walking between shaded areas or indoors, but they will not shield your skin from harmful rays if you are outside for a longer time span or if you will be in intense sunlight”. In order to get the proper amount of SPF in one of these products you would have to apply the product MUCH thicker than most people would wear. You will get better sun protection from a generous application of SPF 15 sunscreen than a thin application of SPF 50.

So what am I getting at with my SPF rambling? It’s a good idea to add a separate facial sunscreen to your routine every day. (Not to mention your body but that’s another topic).

I’ll admit I haven’t always been diligent in applying my facial sunscreen. Many times it was because even with the “oil-free” versions I still felt a bit greasy. I have combination/oily skin and it doesn’t take much to make it feel sticky/gross. I have found the solution. A couple of days ago I picked up NEUTROGENA® ULTRA SHEER® WATER-LIGHT® Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 60. It’s a very lightweight liquid that you shake up before applying. After the application I didn’t feel like I had anything on my face and there was no sheen on my skin. It works very well under makeup.

If you are like me and haven’t been a big fan of other facial sunscreens – this one is worth a try.

Review: Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation

28 Mar
I don’t buy a lot of drugstore foundations  because they frequently don’t have testers and I also find it hard to find a color that matches my skin.
When I saw the Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation I decided to give it a try. It was on sale for less than $10 and I’m always looking for a solution to my oily T-zone woes.
The Claim : A feather light, oil free formula with an airy mousse texture that won’t feel heavy or greasy. Delivers all day shine control and blends flawlessly for a natural looking matte finish. Minimizes the appearance of pores.
My impression:
  • It does feel very weightless when it is on. I hate feeling like I have a mask of makeup
  • It is very natural looking  and doesn’t cake
  • The squeeze tube is great and doesn’t take up a ton of space
  • You only need a tiny pea sized amount for your whole face (I like to apply it with a damp Beauty Blender for a natural look)
  • It provides medium coverage
I still get a bit of breakthrough shine on my forehead but I have yet to find something that keeps me matte all day and doesn’t’ t look like a mask. This foundation comes in 6 shades which isn’t stellar but even with my fair skin I managed to find one to match.
The Verdict: Good value and worth trying if you can find one that matches your skin tone.

Review: COVERGIRL Flamed Out Mascara

25 Mar
I was searching for a new mascara when I saw this on sale at the drugstore and was intrigued ( I think it was the shape of the brush that caught my eye).
It claimed to instantly boost volume and lift the lashes up and out. For $6 I figured I would give it a try.  Here are my thoughts:
  • The brush was terribly awkward. It didn’t reach across the whole lash line and I found I got wayyyy too much product on the brush. Even after wiping it off on the neck of the bottle it went on my lashes pretty clumpy.
  • I bought the waterproof formula but it was definitely not waterproof. If my eyes  watered even a little I would have mascara all over my under eye area.
  • It flaked terribly for me.
The verdict: This product was a major disappointment  and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation Review

29 Oct

With my last Sephora order I chose a sample of the Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation. Normally I don’t have much luck with foundation samples because I have very pale skin and most of the time they only send one color. This sample included 4 colors and the lightest color was actually a pretty good match for me.

Smashbox description:

Light Technology completely evens out skin for a totally natural, luminous finish. (Think gel-covered pigments that mimic photo filters to blur imperfections.)

Created in our studios, this HD formula was developed to keep up with advancing photo technology by giving you flawless coverage that’s undetectable to the naked eye.

•    Works with all undertones
•    Buildable sheer-to-medium coverage
•    Long-wearing
•    Moisturizing
•    Sweat and humidity resistant

The foundation comes in 10 shades. What I liked about it was that it felt light and natural on the skin, looked sheer, but still provided decent coverage.  This would be the perfect weekday makeup for me – when tinted moisturizer doesn’t have enough coverage but a full foundation feels like too much.

It blended VERY well. Normally I apply with a Beauty Blender or use my fingers and blend it out with the blender afterwards. After I applied the Smashbox foundation I didn’t even feel the need to go over it with the blender (but I did out of habit).

Did I mention that it has SPF? Well it does which is a big selling point for me because I am fanatical about wearing sunscreen.

Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation can be purchased from the Smashbox website for $42.

I think its worth the investment if a medium/sheer coverage, everyday, natural-looking foundation is what you are looking for.

The Search Is Over! I found my HG lipgloss!

23 Oct

Many, many years ago, I happened to find THE PERFECT COLOR of lipgloss at the drugstore (It was Maybelline Shine Seduction in Spiced Potion). I’m not exaggerating. I recommended it to almost everyone I did makeup for – it flattered pretty much everyone. Unfortunately the product line  was discontinued and I have spent years and many $ searching for a replacement. I can’t even hazard a guess as to how many other lip glosses I have gone through since then (Check out the picture at the top of my blog and imagine a whole bunch more).  They were ether too brown, too pale, too pink, too coral. ..None of them were the perfect peachy pinky MLBB (My lips but better) color that this gloss had been.

Last week I was Goggling lipgloss swatches when I came across the Vapour Organic Beauty site. (This was after I had already ordered 2 Clinique chubby sticks from Sephora!) Of course I had to browse the lipglosses and there were several I thought that might be similar but you can never tell over a computer monitor. The great thing about the site is that they offer a sample kit on their site. For $15 you can try 5 different product samples. (And you also get a coupon for $10 off if you buy a full size product within the next 60 days). I ended up ordering 2 glosses and 3 lipsticks.  When the samples arrived yesterday I tried one of the glosses  immediately and squealed with delight because I found my MLBB shade!

Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss

About the gloss itself – it smells like makeup rather than scented and flavored like other glosses. That might bother some people but it didn’t bother me.  The gloss has a nice subtle shimmer to it and the color is sheer but still quite visible. The texture is smooth and feels more like an oil (not the best descriptor but can’t think of something better) rather than a sticky gloss.  It has plumping in the name but to be honest I didn’t notice a plumping effect. That being said I already have quite full lips to begin with and plumping had never been a factor in my purchase.

Why You Shouldn’t Sleep with Your Makeup On

10 Jun

Some friends and I were discussing how long it takes us to get ready to go to bed. I was surprised by how many people admitted that they sleep with their makeup on. Just the thought makes me cringe. Even in university when I would stay out until all hours of the night and come home ready to sleep through the next day at a MINIMUM I always washed my face and brushed my teeth.

I know this is a bit of a reversal – normally I’m telling you how to apply makeup but now I’m telling you to take it off! Sure the occasional night of passing out in bed with your makeup on probably won’t do any major damage but you don’t want to make a habit out of it and this is why:

  • First of all – you have sebum in your pores and the job of your sebum is to moisturize and protect your skin while removing dead skin cells and irritants. When you leave your makeup on the makeup can clog your pores so that  your skin can’t exfoliate itself (which leads to dull looking skin) and may cause the sebum to build up under the skin and cause….acne.

Lets say that you sleep with your makeup on and you have been lucky enough to avoid acne  – is it still important to take off your makeup? It sure is!

  • At a MINIMUM you need to take of any eye makeup every night. Not only is leaving mascara on your lashes bad for them (it will make them much more likely to fall out), it increases the risk of transfer into your eye (sometimes from your makeup rubbing on your pillow) which can cause irritation and infection. Not fun.
  • Makeup attracts dirt, grime, grease, bacteria and pollutants (aka free-radicals – heard of those?) and can trap them against the skin. While the damage this does may not be immediately obvious, the free radicals will damage your skin at a cellular level (wrinkles anyone?)
  • Last but not least the makeup will rub off your skin on to your pillow and unless you use a fresh pillowcase every night, you are rubbing your face in all that grime, pollutants etc while you sleep. EW!

So there it is – my lecture on why you need to wash your face every night.  If you aren’t sure what kind of cleanser to use there is a great list here  with lots of inexpensive drugstore products included :
