Facial Sunscreen

27 Jun

Do you wear sunscreen every day? If not have you added it to your skincare/makeup routine yet? Not only does it help prevent wrinkles (who needs to spend $$ on fancy wrinkle treatment creams when you can prevent approximately 80% of wrinkles from happening in the first place?) but it also helps prevent skin cancer which happens to be on the rise.

You may think you are protected if you wear Foundation, Tinted moisturizer, BB or CC cream with SFP but according to the Environmental Working Group “BB and CC creams are not adequate for use in intense sunlight nor long periods. Some of them may help protect skin from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation during low-exposure activities such as driving, walking between shaded areas or indoors, but they will not shield your skin from harmful rays if you are outside for a longer time span or if you will be in intense sunlight”. In order to get the proper amount of SPF in one of these products you would have to apply the product MUCH thicker than most people would wear. You will get better sun protection from a generous application of SPF 15 sunscreen than a thin application of SPF 50.

So what am I getting at with my SPF rambling? It’s a good idea to add a separate facial sunscreen to your routine every day. (Not to mention your body but that’s another topic).

I’ll admit I haven’t always been diligent in applying my facial sunscreen. Many times it was because even with the “oil-free” versions I still felt a bit greasy. I have combination/oily skin and it doesn’t take much to make it feel sticky/gross. I have found the solution. A couple of days ago I picked up NEUTROGENA® ULTRA SHEER® WATER-LIGHT® Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 60. It’s a very lightweight liquid that you shake up before applying. After the application I didn’t feel like I had anything on my face and there was no sheen on my skin. It works very well under makeup.

If you are like me and haven’t been a big fan of other facial sunscreens – this one is worth a try.

Why didn’t I try this before! Review – MUFE Pro- Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation

8 Nov

A few months ago I was in Sephora looking for a good face powder and the sales associate there recommended the MAKEUP FOR EVER  Pro- Finish Multi-Use Powder Foundation.  According to the company it can be used wet or dry but the plan was never to use it as a foundation  – only a finishing powder.

With its transforming texture, PRO FINISH is the 1st multi-use powder foundation that allows you to fully customize your finish and coverage level.
Formulated with exclusive bio-mimetic coated pigments, its breakthrough formula can be used wet or dry.

Apply it wet for a sheer semi-matte perfection or dry for a full coverage, matte result.
Created with talc lightweight formula, its texture is long lasting, has buildable coverage with no chalky effect and easily blends for a perfect professional result in just minutes.

Enriched with hydrating ingredients, PRO FINISH corrects and evens the complexion without drying our the skin.
Choose from its wide range of shades to find your perfect match.

As a finishing powder the Multi – Use powder was ok but I wasn’t wowed.  I still had an T-zone after a pretty short amount of time.  II still used it occasionally but it wasn’t my favorite product by any means.

Today I was  getting ready for work and just for the heck of it I decided I would  use  the powder wet and see what happened. I was pleasantly surprised!  It looked very natural and still did a good job evening out my complexion. If I had more time I could probably have gone over the uneven areas again for more coverage.  The best part? I went to the bathroom at 9am (did my makeup at 7) and my t zone wasn’t shiny. At 11:30 am it was starting to look a tiny bit shiny but normally by this time of day I would have an oil slick on my tzone.  It’s almost 3pm now and I still haven’t had to blot. This has NEVER happened before! I didn’t use mattifying products or powder – just the wet powder foundation!

The powder comes in 19 colors and is available at Sephora or the MAKEUP FOR EVER website.

Boscia BB Cream

5 Nov

I got a sample of this BB Cream with an order from Sephora quite a while ago. I finally decided to try it out last week. I was hesitant because it’s supposed to be one of those self-adjusting shades and honestly I’m a little leery of those.

What it is:
An oil-free, skin-perfecting “Blemish Balm” that creates a flawless finish as it moisturizes and nourishes the skin.

What it is formulated to do:
– Oil-free botanical formula to promote skin elasticity and reduce the look of fine lines
– Features SPF 27 sun protection
– Comes in one universal lustrous shade

B.B. Cream is the ultimate multifunctional treatment. The gentle botanical formula creates a lustrous, flawless finish as it hydrates, firms, and soothes the skin. It helps to diminish the appearance of pores, fine lines, and uneven skintone while providing long-wearing, natural coverage that conceals imperfections. The self-adjusting shade warms to complement most skintones for sheer, flawless coverage. Designed to repair damage and protect skin from future damage without irritation, it’s packed with antioxidants and physical sunscreens that provide broad-spectrum sun protection rated to SPF 27 and PA++. The PA system is a grade of UVA protection that provides superior defense against the rays that cause collagen damage and photo-aging of the skin.

My first impression – the formula was definitely not what I was expecting. When I first opened the package some liquid came out – like the product had seperated.  I don’ t know if it was because I had the sample for a while or if thats they way it normally is. I had to mix it together in my hands before I could apply it and it felt pretty watery and was hard to mix.  When I put the cream on my face it looked quite dark but it did lighten up a bit. I wouldn’t say it matched my skin tone – it gave me a yellowish cast that made me feel jaundiced.  Based on that sample it isn’t a product I would spend my money on.

Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation Review

29 Oct

With my last Sephora order I chose a sample of the Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation. Normally I don’t have much luck with foundation samples because I have very pale skin and most of the time they only send one color. This sample included 4 colors and the lightest color was actually a pretty good match for me.

Smashbox description:

Light Technology completely evens out skin for a totally natural, luminous finish. (Think gel-covered pigments that mimic photo filters to blur imperfections.)

Created in our studios, this HD formula was developed to keep up with advancing photo technology by giving you flawless coverage that’s undetectable to the naked eye.

•    Works with all undertones
•    Buildable sheer-to-medium coverage
•    Long-wearing
•    Moisturizing
•    Sweat and humidity resistant

The foundation comes in 10 shades. What I liked about it was that it felt light and natural on the skin, looked sheer, but still provided decent coverage.  This would be the perfect weekday makeup for me – when tinted moisturizer doesn’t have enough coverage but a full foundation feels like too much.

It blended VERY well. Normally I apply with a Beauty Blender or use my fingers and blend it out with the blender afterwards. After I applied the Smashbox foundation I didn’t even feel the need to go over it with the blender (but I did out of habit).

Did I mention that it has SPF? Well it does which is a big selling point for me because I am fanatical about wearing sunscreen.

Smashbox Liquid Halo HD Foundation can be purchased from the Smashbox website for $42.

I think its worth the investment if a medium/sheer coverage, everyday, natural-looking foundation is what you are looking for.

The Search Is Over! I found my HG lipgloss!

23 Oct

Many, many years ago, I happened to find THE PERFECT COLOR of lipgloss at the drugstore (It was Maybelline Shine Seduction in Spiced Potion). I’m not exaggerating. I recommended it to almost everyone I did makeup for – it flattered pretty much everyone. Unfortunately the product line  was discontinued and I have spent years and many $ searching for a replacement. I can’t even hazard a guess as to how many other lip glosses I have gone through since then (Check out the picture at the top of my blog and imagine a whole bunch more).  They were ether too brown, too pale, too pink, too coral. ..None of them were the perfect peachy pinky MLBB (My lips but better) color that this gloss had been.

Last week I was Goggling lipgloss swatches when I came across the Vapour Organic Beauty site. (This was after I had already ordered 2 Clinique chubby sticks from Sephora!) Of course I had to browse the lipglosses and there were several I thought that might be similar but you can never tell over a computer monitor. The great thing about the site is that they offer a sample kit on their site. For $15 you can try 5 different product samples. (And you also get a coupon for $10 off if you buy a full size product within the next 60 days). I ended up ordering 2 glosses and 3 lipsticks.  When the samples arrived yesterday I tried one of the glosses  immediately and squealed with delight because I found my MLBB shade!

Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss

About the gloss itself – it smells like makeup rather than scented and flavored like other glosses. That might bother some people but it didn’t bother me.  The gloss has a nice subtle shimmer to it and the color is sheer but still quite visible. The texture is smooth and feels more like an oil (not the best descriptor but can’t think of something better) rather than a sticky gloss.  It has plumping in the name but to be honest I didn’t notice a plumping effect. That being said I already have quite full lips to begin with and plumping had never been a factor in my purchase.

My Everyday Makeup Favorites

31 Dec

People often ask if makeup is better when you buy it from a department store versus a drugstore – and my answer has always been that it depends on the product. That being said drugstore brands have made great strides in the last few years in terms of quality and formulas (perhaps it’s because many drugstore brands are owned by the same parent company as the higher-end brands and would likely share resources and formulas…). But I’m getting a bit off topic.
I don’t discriminate – but I could be what you would call a “woman of loose morals” when it comes to makeup. I have a hard time sticking to one brand or product for every long. The other morning while I was getting ready for work I looked down at my makeup and realized 2 things: a) Somehow without noticing, I have been using the same products for quite a while now (maybe I DO have the ability to commit!) and b) most of my favorite products (aka the ones I use the most often) are from the drugstore. In fact…I think I have settled on a favorite lip gloss *GASP*! (Does this mean I need to change the name of my blog?).
Now we get to the part you have been waiting for…what are my favorite products? I’ll tell you!

1) Foundation – I’ll admit this is fairly new but I’ve worn it for long enough that I am confident that it has become my favorite foundation ever (and let me tell you – I have tried many!).  Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide. I picked this up 2 weeks ago at a Sephora. I was looking for something with coverage, that didn’t feel heavy, looked natural and not dry but that would last for a long time especially in my oily t-zone. So far I have found foundations that had one or more characteristic that I was looking for but never all of them. Well I can finally say I have found my HG foundation. The only con – the price. But…because it meets ALL my needs I feel it’s totally worth it. And a little goes a long long way! You have to shake the bottle and then apply a very small amount. I put 3 or 4 dots on each cheek and blend with a kabuki brush and that all I need. I don’t feel it on my skin, it covers my rosacea, it doesn’t look dry -matte, my oil doesn’t show through after a couple of hours AND it lasts for a long time (all day might be a stretch but  longer than anything else I’ve ever tried)

2) Concealer – I’ve struggled with dark circles all my life. I’m not saying this is the HG concealer for me but it is a pretty decent one and I would have no issues recommending it to people. (that being said there are lots of good drugstore concealers too – I just haven’t found one I absolutely love for MY particular issues). Laura Mercier Secret Concealer.

3) Eyeshadow – when I’m just going to work or being lazy I just sweep one color of eyeshadow on my lids and it is usually Revlon’s Satin Shadow in Nude Slip. Unfortunately I just discovered that they no longer make it and I’m almost out. I’ll have to search for a replacement. Sigh.

4)Mascara – I’m really loving Maybelline’s The Colossal Volume Express Waterproof Mascara. I haven’t had issues with any clumps, my lashes are separated (and they naturally like to clump together), long lovely looking.

5) Contour powder – I have a very round yet square face so I just like to do a tiny bit of contouring under my cheekbone and jawbone. I’ve yet to find anything I like more than Rimmel’s Natural Bronzer

6) I tend to stick to peachy colored blushes and one of the most popular for years has been NARS Orgasm. It is a very nice color BUT you can find a pretty good dupe with Milani’s Baked Blush in Luminoso. Its less than $10 vs $35. I also prefer it because it has less shimmer – I don’t normally want to have shimmery cheeks at work.

7) Lip Liner – I don’t always wear a lip liner but because I normally only wear gloss unless it’s a special occasion, I use this liner to fill in my whole lip so the color lasts longer (and it’s an almost perfect match to my HG lipgloss). I love Rimmel’s Exaggerate Automatic Lip Liner in Natural.

8) And last but not least – the reason I may need to change the name of my blog, my HG lipgloss….Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Super Natural. I love. love, love it! It’s the MLBB gloss I have been searching for. I bought 3 of them. One to keep at home with my makeup, one to keep in my purse and one to keep in my desk at work. I have never done that before with another gloss – because usually I’m so fickle.

Here is a picture of the finished result:

normal face or….duckface!
